SUPPORTING

Educational Settings

As a Level 7 Specialist practitioner in learning difficulties and differences, I work closely with schools to provide expert, tailored support that meets the unique needs of each learner. Through detailed assessments, targeted direct interventions, specialist advice, and raising awareness of diverse learning profiles, I help create inclusive environments where every student can thrive. By collaborating with teachers, parents, and support staff, we develop practical strategies that build confidence, independence, and academic success.

Who I Support

I support a wide range of learners with diverse needs, including those with specific learning difficulties (SpLDs) such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, and processing challenges. My work also extends to students who experience difficulties with concentration, organisation, memory, or exam anxiety. I collaborate with schools, parents, and other professionals to provide personalised strategies and interventions that help every learner reach their full potential.

What I offer

Cognitive and Observational Assessments

I conduct cognitive, observational, and emotional assessments to build a comprehensive understanding of a student’s learning profile. This includes evaluating cognitive skills such as memory, processing speed, attention, and problem-solving, as well as observing their approach to tasks and behaviour in the classroom. I also assess emotional factors like confidence and motivation, alongside fine motor skills that may affect handwriting and practical tasks. Based on these insights, I can identify specific learning difficulties and recommend tailored support strategies. If needed, I will also advise on appropriate onward referrals to other professionals for further assessment or intervention.

Screeners / Diagnostic Assessments

I offer screeners for ADHD, dyslexia, and dyscalculia to quickly identify potential areas of difficulty. For more in-depth evaluation, I provide diagnostic assessments for dyslexia, SpLD maths, and dyscalculia.

Exam Access Arrangements

I assess students to determine eligibility for Exam Access Arrangements. I can complete the required Part 2 or Form 8, providing schools with the evidence needed to secure appropriate accommodations and ensure fair exam access tailored to each student’s needs.

Tuition & Coaching

I offer targeted intervention programs tailored to individual needs, focusing on building skills, confidence, and independence.  Mentoring support helps learners develop self-advocacy and study skills, essential for academic success and beyond.

Advisory Services

I provide expert advice on supporting learners with specific learning difficulties and neurodiversity.  This includes guidance or intervention planning, best practices for inclusion, and navigating assessment pathways.

Support Across Educational Pathways

My services extend to supporting those with EHCPs, students educated outside of mainstream settings and students working toward alternative qualifications.

Cognitive vs. Diagnostic Assessments:
What's the Difference

Cognitive Assessment

A cognitive assessment provides a profile of a student's learning strengths and needs - exploring working memory, processing speed, verbal and non-verbal reasoning, etc.  These are useful for identifying learning patterns, informing classroom practice, and tailoring intervention

Diagnostic Assessment

A diagnostic assessment (e.g. for dyslexia or dyscalculia) is more comprehensive.  It combines cognitive testing with attainment measures, developmental background, and relevant behavioural observations.  It results in a formal diagnosis (if appropriate), and includes a full written report compliant with SASC guidelines - suitable for access arrangements, EHCP advice, or DSA applications.

What to Expect from Specialist Assessment, Tuition and Mentoring

Every learner is different, which is why personalised support can make such a difference. Whether a student needs help understanding their learning profile, targeted academic tuition, or mentoring to manage challenges, my aim is to provide support that is both practical and empowering.

Initial Discussion
We start with a friendly, informal conversation to explore the learner’s needs. This may be the first step in arranging an assessment, or it might follow a recent diagnosis or school referral. We will identify key focus areas such as literacy, numeracy, study habits, organisation, or emotional wellbeing, and decide whether assessment, tuition, mentoring, or a combination is most appropriate.

Specialist Assessment
Where appropriate, I carry out detailed diagnostic or cognitive assessments to better understand the learner’s strengths and areas of difficulty. These can identify specific learning differences such as dyslexia or dyscalculia, and may also provide evidence to support Exam Access Arrangements. Assessment findings guide any recommendations for tuition or mentoring and help inform school-based support.

Personalised Support Plan
Following assessment or discussion, each learner receives a tailored support plan based on their profile, goals, and learning preferences. Tuition might focus on areas such as spelling, reading comprehension, or maths confidence. Mentoring can help build focus, motivation, emotional resilience, and self-belief, especially for learners navigating anxiety or barriers around learning.

Flexible Delivery
All services are available online or in person where possible, with flexible scheduling to fit around the learner’s school routine and family commitments. I work in close partnership with families and schools to ensure joined-up support.

Regular Review and Communication
Progress is reviewed regularly, and approaches are adapted to suit the learner’s evolving needs. I provide clear, constructive feedback to parents, carers, and schools, supporting a collaborative approach to learning and wellbeing.

Empowering the Learner
My overall goal is to help each learner feel more confident, independent, and in control of their learning. Whether through assessment, tuition, or mentoring, the focus is always on building understanding, practical skills, and a sense of capability that can last well beyond the sessions.

Advisory Services and Support for Learners Outside Mainstream Education

Not all students thrive in or have access to a traditional school environment. I provide flexible, learner-centred support for children and young people in alternative provisions, education other than at school (EOTAS), or those currently unable to attend due to medical, emotional, or social factors.

Advisory Support
I work with schools, local authorities, and families to help develop appropriate support plans, advise on interventions, and contribute to EHCP processes. My role can include consulting on learning profiles, suggesting reasonable adjustments, or advising on next steps following assessment.

Direct Learner Support
I offer individualised tuition and mentoring for students not currently in school or in non-mainstream settings. Sessions are designed to meet each learner where they are — helping to re-engage them with learning, build confidence, and work towards realistic educational goals at a manageable pace.

Collaborative Approach
Support is delivered in close collaboration with families, key professionals, and care teams where relevant. The focus is always on creating a calm, consistent, and positive learning experience that recognises each learner’s strengths and challenges.

Teacher

“** is more confident in lessons because he is more confident in the basics and he is like a different student compared to the autumn term. I  cannot quite believe the level of positive impact this has had.”

Elementary School Teacher

“Emma runs sessions for 15 pupils which she targets to their specific area of need.

I cannot recommend Emma highly enough.  She is extremely knowledgeable and professional.  Her sessions have proved invaluable for both pupils and staff.  Emma actively works with staff at Fulbrook to support pupils' learning beyond her sessions and has offered advice to the SEND team regarding assessment and access arrangements in our transition to a secondary school."

Teacher and Pupil

"Professional, approachable, and highly efficient — Emma supported us with assessments under tight deadlines, handled documentation smoothly, and made the whole process easy to manage. Her input was much appreciated, and we look forward to working together again."

Class Raising Hands
  • Is it too late to be assessed for dyslexia or another Specific Learning Difficulty?
Not at all. Many adults seek assessment later in life — sometimes during further study, in the workplace, or simply for personal understanding. I provide full diagnostic assessments for dyslexia and dyscalculia, as well as screening tools where appropriate.
  • I’m not in education — can I still access support?
Yes. I work with adults in a variety of situations, including those in employment, between jobs, or not currently in education. I offer cognitive assessments, study skills coaching, and mentoring that’s tailored to your goals and learning needs.
  • Will your report be accepted by universities or workplaces?
Yes. My diagnostic assessments and reports are conducted in line with current SASC guidelines and are suitable for applications such as Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA), Access to Work, and reasonable adjustments in learning or employment settings.
  • Can I receive help without a formal diagnosis?
Absolutely. Many adults benefit from mentoring, tuition, or strategy support — whether or not they have a diagnosis. I’ll work with you to identify your strengths and challenges and help build confidence in your learning or work environment.
  • Do you offer adult assessments and support?
Yes. I offer diagnostic assessments, screeners, tuition, and mentoring for adults. This includes workplace strategy support and help with developing practical skills for daily and professional life.
  • Can I receive support if I’m not in formal education?
Absolutely. Whether you're in employment, training, or not currently in a formal setting, I can support your learning goals and access needs.
  • Do you support adult learners working towards Functional Skills qualifications?
Yes — tuition and mentoring are available to help adults prepare for and succeed in Functional Skills courses.
  • What if I feel anxious about the assessment?
You're not alone — many adults feel nervous. I aim to create a calm, respectful space where you’ll feel supported and understood.
