I Can’t Afford Tuition or Mentoring — What Can I Do?

Learning challenges don’t stop just because funds are tight. If you’re struggling to afford tuition, mentoring, or specialist support, there are still plenty of effective strategies and resources that can help you or your child keep progressing.

1. Use Free or Low-Cost Online Resources 💻

There are many excellent websites, apps, and YouTube channels offering free lessons, tips, and practice activities for a range of learning needs — from reading and spelling to maths and organisation.

2. Access Public Library Support 📚

Libraries often have free access to books, audiobooks, and sometimes workshops or tutoring sessions. Many also offer free digital resources and learning tools.

3. Build a Structured Routine at Home

Creating a predictable daily routine with clear goals can help with focus and motivation. Small, consistent steps often lead to steady progress.

4. Use Multi-Sensory Learning Techniques 🎨👐

Engage different senses to reinforce learning. For example, use physical letter tiles for spelling, draw diagrams to explain ideas, or listen to audiobooks while following the text.

5. Connect with Support Groups and Forums 🤝

Parent groups, online forums, and local charities can offer advice, encouragement, and sometimes access to free or low-cost resources.

6. Advocate for Support at School or Work 🏫💼

While statutory rights to reasonable adjustments usually apply to those with a formal diagnosis, you can still ask for support. Many schools and employers are open to providing flexibility, assistive tools, or mentoring on a discretionary basis.

7. Focus on Strengths and Celebrate Small Wins 🎉

Building confidence is key. Recognise and reward effort and progress, however small, to keep motivation high.
