What Are Access Arrangements and How Can They Help You?


Access Arrangements are official adjustments put in place during exams or assessments to help students with disabilities or specific learning difficulties (SpLDs) demonstrate their true abilities without being unfairly disadvantaged.



Who Can Get Access Arrangements?


Access Arrangements are available to students of all ages with conditions such as:

  • Dyslexia, dyscalculia, or dyspraxia

  • ADHD or autism

  • Physical disabilities or sensory impairments

  • Mental health conditions

  • Medical conditions affecting stamina or concentration


They are designed to provide fair access to exams, ensuring everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed.



Common Types of Access Arrangements


Some of the most common adjustments include:

  • Extra time (usually 25%-50%) ⏳

  • Use of a computer or word processor for writing 💻

  • Rest breaks during exams 🧘‍♂️

  • A reader or scribe to assist with reading or writing aloud 👩‍🦯✍️

  • Use of coloured overlays or coloured paper for visual stress 🌈

  • Separate or smaller venue to reduce distractions 🧑‍🏫



How Access Arrangements Work in Schools


1. Evidence gathered by the school

Schools build evidence over time, including:

  • Normal way of working in class and internal assessments

  • Teacher observations and records

  • Attainment data and progress tracking

  • Support already in place

2. Assessment (where required)

If needed, the school may arrange an assessment with:

  • A specialist assessor or educational psychologist

  • A qualified SENCo or assessor using approved tests


An external report alone does not guarantee access arrangements.

3. School decision-making

The SENCo (or access arrangements assessor) decides what arrangements are appropriate, based on:

  • JCQ regulations

  • Evidence of need

  • The student’s normal way of working

4. Application and inspection

  • Most arrangements are centre-determined and do not need exam board approval

  • The school must hold evidence and be ready for JCQ inspection

5. Implementation

Approved arrangements are put in place for exams and assessments.



Why Are Access Arrangements Important?


They help level the playing field by recognising the extra time or support some students need due to their conditions. This ensures that exam results reflect ability, not barriers.
